Seoul Metropolitan Government Implements 'Smart Over-Height Entry Prevention System' to Stop Tunnel Collisions
Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced the official launch of the 'Smart Over-Height Entry Prevention System' on the Sinwol-Yeouido Underground Road to fundamentally prevent vehicle-collision accidents in tunnels restricted to small vehicles.
Key Highlights of the System Implementation:
• Target Infrastructure: Sinwol-Yeouido Underground Road (Currently in operation) and Seobu Expressway Underground Road (Scheduled for March 2026).
• Proven Accuracy: In 360 day-and-night field tests using various cargo types (including pipes and boxes), the system demonstrated a remarkable 99.13% detection accuracy.
• Operational Mechanism: Utilizing EchoVu’s advanced sensing technology, the system measures vehicle height in real-time before entry. If a vehicle exceeds the 3.0m limit, it triggers immediate driver alerts and guides detour routes.
• Safety Impact: Through these proactive measures, tunnel collision accidents have significantly decreased from a monthly average of 2.7 (2021–2022) to just 0.55 (Jan–Nov 2025).
Han Byeong-yong, Head of the Disaster and Safety Management Office at Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "We are committed to ensuring the safety of both drivers and infrastructure by fundamentally reducing collision accidents in underground roads restricted to small vehicles."
